Son Heung-min Targeted in $215K Blackmail Scandal: Arrest Warrants Issued

Credit : Allkpop

In a shocking turn of events, South Korean football icon Son Heung-min, currently a star striker for Tottenham Hotspur, has become the alleged victim of a blackmail scheme involving a former romantic partner and her new boyfriend.

The Alleged Plot

A woman in her 20s, identified only as Yang, reportedly claimed she was pregnant with Son’s child in June 2024 and demanded 300 million won (approx. $215,000 USD) to keep the matter private. Though an abortion was later confirmed, there is no conclusive evidence that the child was his.

To protect his reputation and career, Son’s representatives say they made the payment, and Yang signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with strict terms, including a 3 billion won penalty for breaking it.

 Things Spiral

After their relationship ended, Yang began dating a man in his 40s, identified as Yong. That’s when the story took a darker turn. Yong allegedly demanded an additional 70 million won ($50,000) from Son, threatening to leak the pregnancy story to the media.

He reportedly reached out to news programs, including JTBC’s Crime Chief, describing the subject as “a Korean footballer currently playing in Europe.” He even shared KakaoTalk messages, medical records, and the NDA he claimed to have found on Yang’s phone.

 Arrest Warrants Issued

On May 17, 2025, the Seoul Central District Court issued arrest warrants for both Yang and Yong, citing risks of fleeing and evidence tampering. Yang denies any involvement in the blackmail, while Yong expressed remorse, saying, “I’m sorry.”

Public Backlash Over Court Treatment

Yang’s court appearance caused a stir online. Videos showed her restrained with rope, wearing tight athletic clothes and a mask. As she attempted to hide her face with a folder, police reportedly took it away. Netizens criticized the treatment as excessive, arguing that she is not a violent criminal and deserved more respectful handling.

What’s Next?

As the case unfolds, attention is turning to broader issues of privacy, blackmail in celebrity culture, and legal boundaries in handling public figures. Son Heung-min has not made a personal statement, but his agency has firmly denied wrongdoing and stated they acted solely to prevent reputational harm.

Stay tuned as the investigation continues — and justice takes its course.
