Police Officer and Prosecutor Indicted for Leaking Late Actor Lee Sun Gyun’s Investigation Details

In a dramatic turn of events, both a police officer and a prosecutor have been indicted for leaking confidential details from the high-profile drug investigation involving the late actor Lee Sun Gyun.
On June 5, the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office, under Chief Prosecutor Choi Jong Pil, revealed that a police officer from the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency and an investigator from their own office are facing charges—though not detained—for breaching official secrecy laws.
The police officer, known as Officer A, is accused of handing over a sensitive internal report to a journalist. The document, created by the police’s Narcotics Crime Division on October 18, 2023, laid out private information—including names, criminal records, identities, and occupations—of those tied to the case, Lee Sun Gyun included.
Investigator B is facing similar accusations. A day after the internal report was prepared, on October 19, a bombshell article hit the press revealing that a major actor was under investigation for drug use. That actor turned out to be Lee Sun Gyun.
Adding another twist, Journalist C—who allegedly received the leaked document from Officer A—has also been indicted. Journalist C is said to have passed the report along to another reporter, triggering a violation of the Personal Information Protection Act.
The scandal has sparked widespread outrage, especially over how recklessly sensitive information was handled in a case already fraught with public scrutiny. Lee Sun Gyun, who was under intense media and legal pressure during the investigation, died on December 27, 2023. Before his passing, he had asked for a private police summons to avoid a media frenzy—an appeal that was denied. Instead, he was paraded in front of cameras, deepening the controversy.
These indictments mark a significant moment in the push for accountability, with growing calls for stronger safeguards around privacy and fairness in high-stakes investigations—particularly those involving public figures.
